Hoverboards
Every hoverboard on this page comes in one of two sizes. The 8.5-inch Off-Road Hoverboard runs on off-road tyres for grass, sand and unpaved ground, with two 400 W motors, a 120 kg rider limit and up to 9.3 mph (15 km/h). The 6.5-inch Hoverboard has a 700 W motor, a 100 kg limit and up to 7.5 mph (12 km/h). Both sizes come in several designs, on their own or as a kart set with a Hoverkart, a go-kart seat for hoverboards. Private land only, with the landowner's permission. Fitted to a hoverboard, the kart may only be used on private land, with the landowner's permission.

Choosing an adult hoverboard: weight first
Every board comes with a rider limit, and for an adult it is the first figure to check. A 6.5-inch board is limited to 100 kg, an 8.5-inch board to 120 kg. Count what you wear and carry as well as your body weight: boots, a heavy coat and a rucksack all add up. If the total comes close to a limit, choose the board with more margin. Rider help explains what counts towards the limit in more detail.
Heavier adults: the 120 kg boards
Heavier adults should start with an 8.5-inch Off-Road Hoverboard. Each one runs two 400 W motors from a 36 V, 4.0 Ah battery (about 144 Wh), against a 700 W motor and a 24 V, 4.0 Ah battery (about 96 Wh) on the 6.5-inch Hoverboard. More weight means more work for the motors, so expect a heavier rider to cover less than the maximum of about 6 miles (10 km), and less again on grass. The off-road tyres also make it the size for grass, sand and unpaved private ground. Every 8.5-inch design shares these figures; Off-Road Hoverboard - Chrome Blue is one of them, with the full detail on its own page.
Teenagers and lighter adults
Riders under 100 kg can pick either board, so the ground decides. On a smooth private drive or a level paved area, a 6.5-inch Hoverboard such as Hoverboard - Chrome Blue is compact and turns quickly. For grass, sand or unpaved ground, an 8.5-inch board fits better at any weight. Both sizes carry the rider on two wheels, one per foot; a board balanced on one central wheel rides quite differently, as our single-wheel comparison shows. When you compare hoverboards for teenagers, think a little ahead: a teenager who is still growing gets longer use from a board with a 120 kg limit. The age guidance from the manufacturer starts from around 8, with adult supervision, so a younger sibling can ride the same board on the same terms.
Speed figures for adult riders
Top speed on the 8.5-inch: up to 9.3 mph (15 km/h). On the 6.5-inch: up to 7.5 mph (12 km/h). Treat them as ceilings, not targets. For an adult beginner the useful speed is far lower: walking pace while you learn to step on, turn and stop. What makes an adult hoverboard suit an adult is the rider limit and the ground it can handle, not a higher top speed.
One board for several riders
If adults and teenagers will share a board, size it for the heaviest rider. A household with one rider above 100 kg should buy an 8.5-inch board, even if everyone else is lighter. Agree the ground rules before the first ride: one person on the board at a time, a helmet that fits each rider, private land only, and an adult present whenever a child rides. Keep charging to one spot with a hard floor and someone always nearby.
Checklist before you buy
- Weigh yourself in your riding gear and compare the result with 100 kg and 120 kg.
- Look at the ground: hard and level, or grass, sand and unpaved surfaces.
- Make sure there is private land you can use, with the landowner's consent and no public access.
- Plan a few practice sessions on flat, open ground, away from people and obstacles.
- Buy a helmet and protection for wrists, knees and elbows before the first ride.
- Choose a charging spot: a hard, dry floor away from anything that burns, where someone can stay close.
- Decide whether you want to stand or sit; both sizes also come as a kart set.
Riding seated as an adult
The Hoverkart is a go-kart seat for hoverboards. Its frame is adjustable, says the supplier, for children and adults, and two hand levers steer while the board provides the drive. Each kart set on this page pairs a board with a Hoverkart: a standard seat, a seat with suspension for extra cushioning and grip on uneven ground, or, with several designs, a seat in a matching colour. Two examples: Off-Road Hoverboard - Chrome Blue + Hoverkart and Hoverboard - Chrome Blue + Hoverkart. There is no confirmed load limit for riding seated yet; talk to us before ordering for a rider near a board limit. None of our hoverboards has a handlebar; if you want to steer with your hands, the Hoverkart gives you two levers instead. Already have one of our boards? The seats on their own, standard or with suspension, are on the Hoverkarts page.
Where adults may ride
Age does not change the law. Legally, hoverboards are powered transporters, and the rules in Great Britain treat a grown adult no differently from a teenager. You need private land, the landowner's permission and a place the public cannot use. Footpaths, parks, car parks, cycle lanes, pavements and public roads are all ruled out, and the police may seize a board used there. Ride it on private land, with the landowner's permission. Not on roads, pavements, cycle lanes or in parks. Your own land, a farmer's field with permission or an enclosed private site all qualify. The same applies on grass, sand and unpaved ground; riding on grass and gravel covers the ground itself.

Teen and adult riders: questions
Can adults ride hoverboards?
Yes, as long as the rider stays under the limit of the board in question: 100 kg on the smaller one, 120 kg on the 8.5-inch, with clothing and anything carried counted. Being an adult does not widen where riding is allowed: only private land, and only with the owner's permission. Use a helmet and pads, and keep the first session slow, on open, level ground.
What size hoverboard is right for an adult?
Decide on weight first and ground second. Up to 100 kg, either board will take you; from 100 kg to 120 kg, only the 8.5-inch. Then think about where you ride: hard, level surfaces suit the 6.5-inch wheels, while grass and firm tracks are the 8.5-inch board's territory.
What counts towards the weight limit?
Everything the board carries: the rider, their clothes and anything in their hands or on their back. Fit a seat and that sits on the board too.
Which board for a teenager who is still growing?
If they are likely to go past 100 kg, or want to ride on grass, the 8.5-inch board fits better: its ceiling is 120 kg. Below that, both boards fit; the 6.5-inch one is smaller.
Can adults use the Hoverkart seat?
The frame goes from child to adult size. How much weight the board takes with the seat on has not been confirmed yet, so check with us before you buy for a heavier rider.
How can an adult beginner lower the risk?
Every board carries some risk of a fall, and habits are what bring it down: a helmet and guards for wrists, knees and elbows, learning at walking pace on flat, open private ground, and charging only with the board's own charger while someone is awake nearby.
Is there a board for riders over 120 kg?
No. 120 kg is the highest limit among our hoverboards (the 8.5-inch boards); anyone heavier should not ride any of them.
How fast do the boards go?
9.3 mph (15 km/h) is the larger board's ceiling and 7.5 mph (12 km/h) the smaller board's, as the manufacturer states. While you are learning, walking pace is the speed to use.
How far will one charge take me?
By the manufacturer's figures, a full charge gives the larger board about 6 miles (10 km) at most and the smaller one about 5 miles (8 km). A heavier rider, grass or a faster pace all cut that down.
Is there an adult hoverboard with a handlebar?
Not in our range: none of our hoverboards has a handlebar. If steering with your hands appeals, the Hoverkart seat adds two levers and turns either board into a sit-down kart.
