Hoverkarts
A sit-down hoverboard is simply a self-balancing board fitted to a Hoverkart seat, our go-kart seat for hoverboards, so that you sit down, work two levers to steer and leave the driving to the board. This page lists the seats on their own, standard or with suspension, in several designs; complete kart sets with an 8.5-inch or 6.5-inch board are listed with the hoverboards. Fitted to a hoverboard, the kart may only be used on private land, with the landowner's permission.

How a seated hoverboard works
The kart is the part you sit in: a seat on a frame you can adjust, plus two steering levers. The hoverboard is strapped into the frame and supplies the motor, the battery and the speed. Each lever acts on one side: it either speeds a wheel up or holds the opposite one back, and the difference in wheel speed turns you. Because you sit, you no longer balance with your feet, which is what people mean by a sitting hoverboard or a seated hoverboard. Some call the result a hoverboard chair or a hoverboard buggy; it is the same idea. Karts steered with a wheel are driven quite differently, and our guide to wheel and pedal technique on a go-kart covers that.
Complete set or seat on its own
No board yet? A set gives you board and seat together, matched to each other. The 8.5-inch kart set has the off-road 8.5-inch board at its base (two 400 W motors, 120 kg board limit) and includes the board's carry bag. The 6.5-inch combo uses the 700 W board with a 100 kg board limit, for hard, level ground. Have one of our boards already? Then pick the standard seat on its own (no suspension) or upgrade to the seat with suspension; both fit either board size.
Standard, suspension or colour-matched
The standard seat is the basic version: frame, straps and levers, nothing more. The seat with suspension keeps all of that and adds damping and grip for uneven ground: worth having if you ride on grass or unpaved ground, less useful on a level, paved surface. The colour-matched seat is a set option that pairs the seat colour with the board design. Carbon has none, and Camouflage has one only on the 6.5-inch combo. Matched seats in the sets: a Chrome Blue board gets a blue seat, a pink seat goes with Chrome Pink and also with Chrome Purple, and Hip Hop has its own Hip Hop seat.
How to put a seat on a hoverboard
- Start with the board powered off, standing on level ground.
- Make the seat frame longer or shorter to suit the person who will ride.
- Lower the board into position so that it rests evenly within the frame.
- Pull each strap tight, then push the board sideways by hand; if it moves, tighten again.
- Sit down with the board still off, check that both levers move freely and are within easy reach, then switch on and ride slowly to begin with.
The supplier reckons on a few minutes for the whole job. Want to ride standing again? Release the straps and the board lifts clear.

Which board goes underneath
Ground is the deciding factor. On unpaved ground, grass or sand, put the seat on the 8.5-inch board, which pairs off-road tyres with twin 400 W motors and a 120 kg board limit. Its maximum is 9.3 mph (15 km/h). On concrete or paving the 6.5-inch board is sufficient: 100 kg limit, up to 7.5 mph (12 km/h). The seat contributes no drive, so speed and range are the board's. A go-kart setup for adult riders needs the larger margin, which points to the 8.5-inch board; see boards that carry adult riders.
Boards from other brands
We have fit information for the two board sizes we sell, and none for other makes. Owners of other brands should check with us first and send the make, model and wheel size plus a picture taken from the side. We would rather tell you we cannot confirm a fit than sell you a seat that might not suit your board.
Seated riding for teenagers and adults
For an adult, the board under the seat sets the limit: 100 kg on the 6.5-inch, 120 kg on the 8.5-inch. The supplier has not yet confirmed a separate load limit with the seat attached, so ask us before ordering for a rider near either figure. The adjustable frame lets riders of different heights find a comfortable position. Read about weight with a kart fitted before you choose.
Before every seated ride
- Frame set for the person riding now, not the last rider.
- Straps still tight after the push test.
- The area walked and clear of stones, people and obstacles.
- Helmet on, wrists, knees and elbows protected.
- An adult present when a child rides.
Where a kart may be used
A seat does not turn a hoverboard into something you may use in public. British law still treats it as a powered transporter: private land only, where the landowner agrees; keep it off public roads and pavements, out of cycle lanes, and away from playgrounds, parks and car parks. Riders need a helmet and pads, and children need a grown-up nearby. The full rules on where a kart may be used are on one page.
Guides for seated riding
Sit-down karts: questions
Is the frame adjustable for a tall rider?
Yes: the frame goes from child to adult size. There is no maximum frame length from the supplier yet, so if the rider is very tall, check with us first.
Can a hoverboard kart go on public roads, or only on private land?
Private land only, and then only with the owner's permission: with the seat fitted it is still classed as a powered transporter. Public roads, pavements and cycle lanes are ruled out, and so are public footpaths and bridleways, even where they cross a field. The government says so in the GOV.UK powered transporters guidance.
What ground can a kart handle?
The 8.5-inch kart set handles grass, sand and unmade tracks, while the 6.5-inch combo belongs on hard, level surfaces. Over bumps, the suspension seat takes the edge off the jolts. Neither is for wet ground: stay off it until it has dried.
Does a seated rider still count towards the board's weight limit?
Yes. The board carries the rider and the seat. Board limits: 6.5-inch, 100 kg; 8.5-inch, 120 kg. A figure for riding seated is not confirmed yet, so talk to us if the rider is close to either.
What should I tell you if my board is not one of yours?
The wheel size, the brand and a photo of the board from the side and from underneath. We then say what we can and cannot advise on.
How quickly is the seat fitted?
In a few minutes, by the supplier's estimate; most of it is adjusting the frame length for whoever rides and tightening the straps.
Is the seat sold on its own?
Yes: every seat on this page, Hoverkart Standard and Hoverkart with Suspension, is sold on its own, in several designs, for owners of our 6.5-inch or 8.5-inch boards. Kart sets with a board are listed with the hoverboards.
Will a seat make the board faster or slower?
Not faster. With no motor or battery inside, the seat adds no drive, so top speed is the board's, and the frame's extra weight can trim the range.
