Description

This bike is not an EAPC. In the UK it counts as a motorcycle or moped: on a road it needs vehicle approval, registration, tax, insurance, a driving licence and a motorcycle helmet. Without these, ride it only on private land, with the landowner's permission.

Obsidian is the all-black Super73 ZX: frame, seat, mudguards and wheels in black, with white Super73 lettering along the frame. For colour, see the ZX in Prickly Pink.

Key features, as pictured

  • Fat tyres with a fine tread pattern on black spoked wheels
  • A rear hub motor marked Super73, shown in close-up next to the gear sprockets
  • A chain from the pedals to the rear wheel
  • A single long seat over a black frame
  • Detail shots of the left-hand grip and lever, and of the stem and handlebar clamp

Before you choose

This page carries no performance figures yet. Motor, battery, speed, range, weight limit and the minimum rider age all wait on the maker's data for the ZX. If one of them settles your choice, contact us first.

How British law classes it

In Great Britain, an e-bike can be ridden like a pedal bike – on roads and cycle paths, without a licence, registration, tax or insurance – only if it is an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC): it has pedals that drive it, its motor has a continuous rated power of no more than 250 W, and the motor stops assisting above 15.5 mph (25 km/h). You must be 14 or over to ride one on the road, and no e-bike may be ridden on the pavement.

A fat tyre e-bike with a motor above 250 W or motor assistance above 15.5 mph (25 km/h) is not an EAPC. In the UK it counts as a motorcycle or moped. A throttle that moves an e-bike above 3.7 mph (6 km/h) without pedalling needs vehicle approval.

Wear a helmet and wrist, knee and elbow guards.

Super73 is a trade mark, and it belongs to its owner. We mention it purely to name the model shown.

Questions riders ask

Is a driving licence needed?

For the road, yes: there the law sees a motorcycle or moped; the description's first lines set out what that involves. Off the road, private land is the place for it, once the landowner has said yes.

What are the motor power and the range?

We have not published them, because the ZX figures from the maker are not confirmed yet. Ask us if you need a number before deciding.

Is a helmet a legal requirement?

Only on the road, where a motorcycle helmet is compulsory for a motorcycle or moped. On private land it is advice, and advice we always give: helmet on, plus the wrist, knee and elbow guards.

Charger and plug

Charger model
[TO CONFIRM: charger model number]

Charge only with the charger made for this product's battery. A charger built for a different battery can start a fire; if yours is lost or damaged, ask us before you buy a new one.

Charging at home

  • Where: indoors, in a dry room at normal room temperature, on tiles, stone or concrete, with nothing that can burn close by.
  • Not in a hallway, on the stairs or by the front door: escape routes stay clear.
  • When: only when the pack is no longer warm from the ride, and only while you are in and awake. No overnight charging.
  • Done: unplug the charger. Never cover the battery or the charger.

Stop and contact us

Warning signs: the pack bulges, feels hot to the touch, leaks, smells of chemicals, fizzes, crackles or smokes. Stop, unplug, move away from it and contact us. A damaged battery is never ridden or charged again.

Fire: leave the building with everyone else and phone 999 from outside; putting it out is a job for the fire service.

Recycling

Household bins, including the recycling bin, are the wrong place for this product, its battery or its charger. Anything with a lithium-ion pack inside has to be handed in separately.

Recycling batteries and chargers

Sending a battery product back

Lithium-ion batteries are dangerous goods in transport. Talk to us before you return anything that has one, and we will book a carrier that accepts it. If a battery looks damaged, has swollen, leaks or has got too hot, do not post it: message us first and wait for our instructions.

Riding rules in Great Britain

Unless the description of this product says otherwise, ride it only on private land, with the landowner's permission: not on roads, pavements, cycle lanes or in parks.

Every ride: helmet on, guards on wrists, elbows and knees, and an adult watching whenever a child rides.
