Drift Trike

A drift kart usually runs on three wheels: a steerable front wheel and hard, slippery rear wheels, so the back steps out and slides through each turn. Some have an electric motor; others run on pedal power or have no drive. The first rule below is for electric drift karts and the second for unpowered ones. An electric drift trike is a motor vehicle in law. Ride it only on private land, with the landowner's permission, and keep children under adult supervision. Not to be used in traffic. Drift Trike

How a drift kart slides

A drift kart grips at the front and lets go at the rear. Up front, an ordinary tyre steers and holds your line. The rear wheels are hard: either plastic sleeves pushed over tyres, or wheels moulded from hard plastic. On a smooth surface they have so little grip that the back of the kart swings wide as soon as you turn in, and the kart travels partly sideways.

The seat is mounted low, which keeps the centre of gravity down and makes the slide feel controlled rather than wild. You hold the slide with small steering movements towards the side the back is swinging to, and you end it by straightening the front wheel and letting the rear catch up. Leaning your body into the turn changes how far the back steps out.

That is why a drift kart behaves so differently from a go-kart. A go-kart is set up to grip at every corner; a drift kart is set up to lose grip on purpose. Speed is not what makes it work. On the right surface the rear will slide even at a modest pace, and most of the skill lies in judging how much to steer and when to let it straighten.

Electric or unpowered: what changes

An electric drift kart has a motor, often in a wheel hub, a battery under the seat or frame and a twist or thumb throttle. It pulls away on its own and can keep a slide going for longer. That brings extra weight, a charging routine and a battery to look after. A drift go-kart without a motor is driven by pedals at the front or simply pushed off, so it is lighter and has nothing to charge, but every slide fades as the speed you started with runs out.

The rule depends on which kind you have.

Electric. An electric drift trike is a motor vehicle in law. Ride it only on private land, with the landowner's permission, and keep children under adult supervision.

Without a motor. Not to be used in traffic. Ride it on private land, with the landowner's permission.

Choosing between pedalling and an electric motor is mostly about effort, weight and noise; the slide itself feels much the same. A question that comes up often is whether any kart may use a road. For the drift karts on this page, the two rules above give the answer.

Choosing ground and space on private land

The surface decides how a drift kart behaves. Smooth, hard and level ground lets the rear slide evenly. Rough concrete slides too, but chews through sleeves quickly. Grass, gravel and loose sand stop the slide and can tip the kart over, so keep it off them. Damp patches, oil and fallen leaves make the grip change suddenly from one corner to the next. Avoid any slope as well: a drift kart gathers speed quickly, and hard rear wheels give little help when you want to stop.

Space matters as much as surface. A slide carries the kart further than you expect, so leave a wide margin around the area you use: no kerbs, posts, walls, cars or garden furniture, and nobody standing where the kart could run on. Walk the ground before every session and pick up stones and debris.

Ask the owner first, even on a relative's land or a place you have used before, and agree when you will use it. When children ride, an adult should stand where the whole area is in view and stop the session if anyone wanders in. Drift karts for adults need even more room, because a heavier rider carries a slide further.

Wheels, sleeves and battery: what wears

The sleeves or hard rear wheels are made to wear: every slide grinds a little off them. Check them before each session. A worn sleeve shows grooves, flat spots or a thin edge, and once the tyre underneath starts to show through, grip returns unevenly and the kart can snap sideways. Replace sleeves in pairs so that both sides slide alike. Drift kart wheels vary in size and fitting, so match replacements to what the kart already has.

The front tyre takes the steering load. Look for cuts, for low pressure if it holds air, and for wear on one edge. Spin the front wheel and listen to the bearing: grinding or roughness means it needs attention. Check that the steering has no free play and that every nut and bolt on the frame is tight.

On an electric drift kart the battery deserves the most care. Charge it on its matching charger only, and only while a person at home can watch over it. Stop using the battery if it gets very hot, swells or smells. Do not ride through puddles, and keep the charging port dry.

Building one yourself: plan first

Building a drift kart at home is a real project, and the planning matters more than the tools. Before you order any parts, decide what will drive it, how the front wheel will steer, how it will stop and where you will ride it. One choice leads to the next: a motor adds weight that the frame and brakes must carry, and a heavier kart needs more room to slide.

Leave welding, wiring and anything to do with the battery to someone qualified, and never build or alter a battery pack yourself. Planning a DIY drift kart starts with those choices, written down before anything is cut or bought.

Sitting down on a hoverboard: the kart sets we also sell

We also sell go-kart seats that fasten to our self-balancing boards with straps, either singly or paired with one of our boards. Riders sit low and steer using two hand levers while the board underneath moves them along. See sit-down karts built on our boards. Fitted to a hoverboard, the kart may only be used on private land, with the landowner's permission.

Drift karts: questions

What is a drift kart, and how is a drift trike different?

A kart with a front wheel that grips and steers, and hard rear wheels or sleeves that let the back slide through each turn; there are usually three wheels. Sellers use both names, often for machines that overlap, so judge one by that set-up rather than by its name.

Electric or without a motor: how do they ride?

An electric one pulls away by itself and can hold a slide for longer, at the cost of extra weight and a battery to charge. One without a motor is lighter and quieter, but each slide fades as the speed you started with runs out.

Where may a drift kart be used?

An electric drift trike is a motor vehicle in law. Ride it only on private land, with the landowner's permission, and keep children under adult supervision. Not to be used in traffic. Ride it on private land, with the landowner's permission.

What ground suits drifting?

Smooth, hard, level ground with space all round, such as an enclosed private stretch of concrete or tarmac, closed to the public, that its owner has agreed you may use. Avoid grass, gravel, sand and slopes, and stay off any surface that is wet, oily or covered in leaves.

What should a rider wear?

A snug helmet, gloves, long sleeves, full-length trousers and sturdy shoes with firm soles. Knee and elbow guards help if the kart tips. Fitting a helmet for kart driving takes a mirror and a couple of minutes.

Can adults ride a drift kart?

They can, if the frame fits and the rider is within the maker's weight limit. Check the seat position, how far it is to the handlebar and the room for your knees, because many drift karts are built around smaller riders.

How fast do the rear wheels or sleeves wear?

It depends on the surface, the rider's weight and how often you slide. Rough concrete wears them down soonest, while smooth, sealed surfaces are kinder. Check them before every session and replace them in pairs once grooves or a thin edge appear. Checks for other rides sit in the rest of our rider help.
